Williams Racing has officially given its 2024 Formula 1 car a proper name – “The Phoenix”. The move marks the first time in the team’s 45‑year history that a chassis has been christened with a distinct moniker, according to a report by SPEEDWEEK.com. The name is intended to symbolise the team’s resurgence after a challenging period, echoing the mythical bird that rises from its own ashes.

Team principal James Vowles explained that the decision was driven by a desire to create a stronger identity for the car and to rally the entire Williams family around a shared narrative. “We wanted something that reflects our ambition and the hard work everyone is putting in to get back to the front of the grid,” Vowles said in a press briefing. The new name will appear on the car’s livery, merchandise and official communications, a departure from the long‑standing practice of simply referring to the chassis by its model code (e.g., FW45).

Technical director Jonathan Carter added that the naming does not affect the car’s development, but it does provide a psychological boost. “When you give a project a name, it becomes more than just a piece of machinery – it becomes a story we can all get behind,” Carter noted. The Phoenix will debut at the season‑opening Bahrain Grand Prix, where Williams hopes to showcase its upgraded power unit and aerodynamic package, both of which have shown promise in pre‑season testing.

For Indian fans, the announcement arrives just as the new F1 calendar is being finalised for 2024. The Bahrain race will be broadcast live on FanCode with a start time of 02:00 IST, followed by the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix at 04:00 IST. Williams’ new identity is expected to generate additional interest among Indian viewers, especially after the team’s recent partnership with Indian sponsor Mahindra Racing, which will see Mahindra branding on the car’s sidepods.

Williams’ decision to name its car also reflects a broader trend in Formula 1, where teams are increasingly focusing on storytelling and fan engagement. By giving the chassis a name, Williams hopes to create a stronger emotional connection with its global fanbase, including the growing community of Indian supporters who follow the sport through digital platforms and local fan clubs.
