Rafael Camara Chooses #77 for His 2027 Haas Debut
The rookie Haas driver has indicated his preferred race number ahead of his 2027 Formula 1 entry.

Haas F1 Team’s newest signing, Brazilian youngster Rafael Camara, has revealed the driver number he hopes to race under when he steps onto the grid in 2027. In a brief statement posted on Formula1.com, Camara said he would like to use the number 77, a digit that holds personal significance for the 19‑year‑old.
Why the number matters
Driver numbers in Formula 1 have become a part of a driver’s brand identity since the sport introduced permanent numbers in 2014. While the reigning champion is allowed to retain the number 1, all other drivers select a number that is not already in use. Camara’s choice of 77 follows a trend among young drivers opting for double‑digit numbers that are easy to recognise on merchandise and on‑track graphics.
Camara explained that the number 77 reflects his admiration for former F1 champion Fernando Alonso, who famously raced with 14, and his own desire to create a distinctive personal brand. The Brazilian also noted that the number appears on his karting helmet and has been a lucky charm throughout his junior career.
Implications for Haas and the 2027 grid
Haas will confirm the final driver line‑up for 2027 later this year, but the early indication of Camara’s number suggests the team is already planning its marketing and livery rollout. The team’s current driver numbers – 47 for Kevin Magnussen and 77 for the newcomer – will be displayed on the car’s sidepods and on official FIA entry lists, pending final approval from the sport’s governing body.
For Indian fans, the announcement adds another talking point ahead of the 2027 season, which will feature a full calendar of 23 races, including the Indian Grand Prix at the Buddh International Circuit, slated to return in 2028. Camara’s debut will be broadcast live in India on FanCode, with race‑day start times adjusted to Indian Standard Time (IST). The first race of the 2027 season is expected to kick off in Bahrain on 2 March, with a 02:30 IST start for the opening sprint.
While Camara’s number is not yet officially locked in – the FIA will confirm the allocation after the full entry list is submitted – the early hint gives fans a glimpse of the branding and personality the young driver will bring to the paddock.
