George Russell handed five‑place grid drop for São Paulo Grand Prix
Mercedes driver George Russell will start five places lower after a fresh power unit is fitted for the Brazilian Grand Prix, per Sky Sports F1 and The Race.

Mercedes‑senior driver George Russell will incur a five‑place grid penalty at this weekend’s São Paulo Grand Prix after the team elected to replace his power unit with a fresh engine. The penalty, mandated by the FIA’s power‑unit component rules, means Russell will start from P9 instead of his qualifying position, should he qualify within the top ten.
Why the penalty was applied
Under the current regulations each driver is allocated a limited number of power‑unit elements – internal combustion engines, turbo‑chargers, MGU‑K, MGU‑H and energy stores – for the season. Exceeding any of these quotas triggers a grid drop. Mercedes confirmed that Russell’s power unit had reached its allocation limit and a new unit was installed during the final practice session, prompting the five‑place sanction.
Impact on the championship battle
The penalty comes at a crucial stage of the 2024 championship. Russell sits third in the drivers’ standings, 27 points behind leader Max Verstappen and 12 points ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Starting from P9 could compromise his ability to score maximum points, especially on a circuit where overtaking is challenging. Verstappen, who qualified on pole, will benefit from a clear track ahead, while Leclerc, starting from P3, will have a strong chance to close the gap.
Mercedes will need to balance the loss of potential points for Russell with the long‑term reliability of the new power unit. The team’s strategy director, James Allison, hinted that the fresh engine could provide a performance edge in the latter stages of the race, potentially offsetting the grid loss.
