Freddie Slater to Make Audi F1 Practice Debut in Mexico
Audi’s junior driver Freddie Slater will take the wheel of a Formula 1 car in two Free Practice 1 sessions at the Mexican GP.

In a move that signals Audi’s growing ambition in Formula 1, junior driver Freddie Slater will take the wheel of an Audi‑powered car for the first time in a Free Practice 1 session at the Mexican Grand Prix. The 24‑year‑old, who finished second in the 2023 FIA Formula 3 Championship, will partner the team’s full‑time drivers in a brief but significant test of the new power unit and chassis in the high‑temperature conditions of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
Per Autosport and Motorsport.com, Slater will drive the car in the first two practice sessions of the weekend, giving the team valuable data on the power unit’s behaviour and the car’s handling in the heat. The debut comes after a season of impressive performances in F3, where Slater’s consistency and racecraft earned him a place in Audi’s junior driver programme. Audi’s chief engineer, Dr. Markus Müller, said the team is eager to see how the young driver adapts to the demands of a Formula 1 machine, noting that “the transition from F3 to F1 is a big step, but Slater’s talent and work ethic make him a natural fit.”
While the practice sessions will not count towards the championship, they are a crucial step in Slater’s progression. The driver will have the opportunity to work closely with the team’s technical staff, gaining insight into the intricacies of F1 engineering and race strategy. Audi has already announced a long‑term partnership with the British driver, who has expressed his ambition to become a full‑time F1 racer. The team’s decision to give him track time in Mexico reflects a broader strategy of nurturing young talent within the Audi brand.
For Indian fans, the Mexican Grand Prix will be available on FanCode India from 6:30 PM IST, covering the entire weekend including the practice sessions, qualifying, and the race. Slater’s debut will be a highlight for those following the development of new talent in the sport, and it offers a glimpse into the future of Audi’s F1 ambitions.
