Bottas to Start From Back of Grid at Mexico City After Power‑Unit Change
Valtteri Bottas will incur a sizable grid drop at the Mexico City Grand Prix after Alfa Romeo’s team replaced his power‑unit, Formula1.com reports.

Alfa Romeo has confirmed that Valtteri Bottas will take a grid penalty at the upcoming Mexico City Grand Prix after the Finnish driver’s power‑unit was changed ahead of the race. The penalty, announced by the FIA, will see Bottas drop several places from his qualifying position, potentially relegating him to the back of the grid depending on where he qualifies.
According to Formula1.com, the penalty stems from the mandatory 2024 power‑unit component limits. Bottas exceeded his allocated quota of internal combustion engines (ICE) and turbochargers, prompting the team to replace the unit before the Mexican round. Under the current regulations, any change beyond the allowed number of components incurs a grid drop, with the exact number of places determined by the FIA’s stewards.
GPblog also highlighted that the FIA’s decision was issued after the team submitted a request for a component change, citing reliability concerns. The governing body applied a standard ten‑place grid drop, which is typical for a power‑unit breach of this nature. Alfa Romeo’s team principal has expressed disappointment but stressed that the move was necessary to ensure the car’s performance and reliability for the remainder of the season.
Implications for the championship
The penalty could have significant ramifications for Bottas’s fight for points in the latter half of the season. Starting from the back of the grid at a high‑downforce circuit like Mexico City makes overtaking more challenging, especially against the likes of Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari who are expected to qualify near the front. Bottas will need to rely on a strong race strategy, tyre management and potential safety‑car periods to climb the order.
For Indian fans, the race will be broadcast live on FanCode with commentary in English and Hindi. The Grand Prix is scheduled for 20 October, with the race start at 19:00 IST. Qualifying will take place on 19 October at 16:00 IST, giving viewers a chance to see where Bottas qualifies before the penalty is applied. Fans can also follow live timing on the official F1 app, which provides real‑time updates on grid positions after penalties are enforced.
