Apple TV+ to Deliver Live Formula 1 in Dolby Atmos Audio
Apple TV+ will now broadcast Formula 1 races with Dolby Atmos sound, enhancing the auditory experience for fans worldwide, including India.
Apple TV+ has announced that its live Formula 1 coverage will soon support Dolby Atmos, the immersive, object‑based audio format that places listeners in the centre of the action. The upgrade will be rolled out for all races on the streaming service, meaning fans can hear the roar of the engines, the squeal of tyres and the subtle nuances of pit‑lane chatter with a three‑dimensional soundstage.
According to Engadget, the move is part of Apple’s broader effort to improve the quality of its sports streaming portfolio. The company has already integrated Dolby Vision for visual enhancements; adding Dolby Atmos completes the high‑dynamic‑range audio‑visual package for F1. The Hollywood Reporter adds that Dolby is working directly with Apple to ensure the live feed is encoded in real‑time, a technical challenge that the two firms have solved for other live events such as the NFL and NBA.
The upgrade will be available to all Apple TV+ subscribers who have a compatible device – such as the latest Apple TV 4K, iPhone, iPad, Mac, or select smart TVs – and a Dolby Atmos‑enabled sound system, whether that’s a soundbar, home‑theater receiver or AirPods Max. Viewers without Atmos‑capable hardware will continue to receive the standard stereo feed, so the change is additive rather than exclusive.
For Indian fans, the timing is significant. The 2024 season’s remaining races, including the Singapore Grand Prix on 22 September and the Japanese Grand Prix on 6 October, will be streamed in Atmos for the first time. Apple TV+ already offers a dedicated F1 channel in India, and the service is available through the FanCode app and other OTT aggregators. Indian viewers can now schedule their race‑day viewing in IST (e.g., the Singapore race starts at 20:00 IST) and enjoy the enhanced audio on any Atmos‑ready setup.
Apple’s partnership with Dolby also underscores the growing importance of premium audio in sports broadcasting, a trend that could influence other OTT platforms and even traditional broadcasters in India to upgrade their sound offerings. As the F1 calendar moves toward its finale, the immersive experience may become a new selling point for fans deciding between cable, satellite and streaming options.
