The qualifying session turned dramatic in Q1 when Red Bull’s rookie Kimi Antonelli lost control at Turn 2, crashing heavily and bringing out the red flag. Antonelli’s incident ended his qualifying run early, relegating the 19‑year‑old to the back of the grid for the race. Autosport highlighted that the crash was a stark reminder of the thin margins on Baku’s narrow, unforgiving layout.
Russell’s pole is his third of the 2024 season and his first at the Baku City Circuit, where he previously finished on the podium in 2022. The Mercedes team praised the driver’s ability to extract maximum performance from the car’s low‑downforce setup, a key factor on the long straights and tight corners that define the Azerbaijani track.
